Parks and Peanut Butter

December 3rd, 2005 by Mike

Here are some more pictures of life and things here. Sorry we donŽt have more pictures of the kids. We are not allowed to take pictures in the orphanage. DonŽt worry, weŽll sneak some sometime because the kids are really cute!

Here is El Parque de la Identidad. Huancayo was originally populated by the Wanka people before being conquered by the IncaŽs. The Wanka people were known for building things with stone and this park is a beautiful example.

Last friday, our house mother, Aurora, taught us how to make peanut butter. A small jar costs 12 soles ($4) but we were able to make twice as much with 1 kilo of nuts (4 soles) in a little over one hour.

Speaking of food, the bakeries are always stocked full of tasty looking cakes!

Today, Juan Jose, the administrator of Mosoq Ayllu took all the volunteers to see some nearby ruins. These were interesting structures created by the Wanka and the IncaŽs to store food at the top of a small mountain.
(L-R:Ashley, Sonya(just arrived last night from California), Juan Jose, Adan (loves having his picture taken), and Alicia)

Here is a view of the whole Mantero valley from the ruins. Huancayo is in the center at the foot of the hills.

Here is a view of roughly the same hills from within Huancayo.

That stone work in the park is incredible! Willie Wanka ( ouch ) would be proud! Making your own peanut butter, wow. I want more pictures of l Parque del Identidad.

Yeah, the park is amazing! ItŽs supposed to represent different aspects of the Wanka culture, but I couldnŽt really figure it out when we were there. They have fountains and lights but they werenŽt on. WeŽll go back again and get more pics!
