The Christmas Rush

December 17th, 2005 by Mike

Well, I thought we had escaped the Christmas rush by being here but thatŽs not the case. We decided to make picture frames from popsicle sticks with the kids at Ladrillera. Now that Christmas is so close, we decided we should make the frames for them and let them decorate them.

50 completed, 30 or so more after we buy more sticks

When we are not working on projects with the kids at Ladrillera, I try my best to teach them something valuable. Here I am playing the Žmultiplication gameŽwith a few kids at Ladrillera. The game uses a simple board that I drew, one or more dice (depending on how long you want the game to last) and a stack of multiplication flashcards.

And here are some more photos I snuck from the toddler house of the Coto Coto orphange.

    Mike,
Great idea with the multiplication game.
A game I played with my kids (when 2 years old or so) is called “number cars.” I’d make 10 paper squares numbered 1 through 10. Then make groups of cars (or any toy–even popsicle sticks) for each card. Shuffle the cards then have the kids pick them. If a child picks an “8″ then he/she has to match the card with the correct pile. Then of course I always ask “Are you sure?” and make them count the cars in the group. Great way to reinforce the numbers.

We love your blog site, Mike and Alicia. Great pictures!
    You are in our prayers.

Hi Alicia and Mike–I have been checking your site from time to time, but just today, 12/20, I got a username and password!!! It sounds a bit rough out there, but probably beats being at the “office”. The pictures are great! The blog site was a great idea. Thanks for letting me be a part of this great journey the two of you have embarked upon. I hope you are both feeling better, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and I am sure that what the two of you are doing for the children will reap rewards for them and for you both for years and years to come. Take care and stay well. Jen
