No eye candy!

March 17th, 2006 by Alicia

Mike’s on another hike today. He just sees the hills and has to go! So here I am at the Internet Cafe. We’re leaving Pucon tomorrow. Our “vacation from our vacation” is almost over. I’ve really liked Pucon. Good food, lots of touristy things to do, and good toilets! A little like the US, but that’s ok. We’ve had time to relax and read quite a bit. Yesterday was another day of doing nothing. It rained all day and through part of the night. We both were woken up by really heavy rain last night. I really thought the roof was going to fall in. I even put my head under the blankets at one point, until I realized how silly that was.

We’ve planned out our days for the rest of our trip and they’re pretty jam packed. Two to three days in each destination, ending in Rio de Janeiro. Our next stop is Puerto Montt where we embark on a 3 day boat trip with Navimag. We’ll sail from from Puerto Montt through the Patagonian Channels down to Puerto Natales. There’s a link to the website on the right. Read all about our journey! We’ll be off of email from the 20th to the 23rd. This is part of the trip that I’ve been really looking forward too (not because we’re off email, but because it should be beautiful)!

Signing off for now…you’ll probably get some pictures from Mike when he gets back!

I wanted to climb up a nearby hill so we asked at the tourism office how to get there. The gentleman said to just start hiking around the shoreline of Lago Villarrica. HereŽs what I was aiming for.

Unfortunately, the guy in the tourist office probably never walked near hear because he neglected to mention the two creek crossings! The first was fairly straight forward, once I found this huge branch to throw across it.

Unfortunately, the second was creek was impassable so my hike ended up being a trip following the river upstream looking for a bridge. The trip got a little more exciting when I realized I was crossing peoplesŽfarms. IŽm just glad the cows seemed to be afraid of humans because they sure do have mean stares!

I also made some friends along the way. These two dogs caught up with me in the woods. (ok, so they caught me off guard and I nearly peeŽd myself) They must have been bored because they followed me for about 4 hours, even posing for pictures.

So, I finally made it back to town via a different route. Fortunately the dogs seemed to recognize town and I happily turned a quick corner and lost them. Good pals but I certainly didnŽt want them following me back to our Hostel.

I’m curious if they celebrate St. Patty’s Day down there. Did you feel any urge to where green?

Keep up the great posts! It’s fun to travel “with” you guys.

Actually, when I got back from my hike, I found Alicia outside a restaurant which advertised Happy St Patricks Day on their sign. Until then it hadnŽt occurred to me.
