The End of the World
March 30th, 2006 by MikeHello from the southern most city on the globe! We are in Ushuaia, Argentina now, dubbed the southern most city (even though there is a small Chilean city just across the bay).
Its chilly here but not as cold as we thought it would be. The scenery is actually a little like the NW with the mountains and the water. The city is located on the Beagle channel, in a bit from the Atlantic. However, we are so far down I dont know if its still considered the atlantic.
When we arrived in town, we walked around looking for accomodations and most were pretty full or too expensive for us. Finally, some locals stopped us and told us about their 4 person apartment. They said we could have it for a reasonable price. Other than being a bit out of the center of town, the place is great! Weve been able to use the kitchen so we dont have to eat out as much… Alicia couldnt resist the sign on one restaurant advertizing King Crab so we had to check it out.
I had the Cazuela, a traditional seafood stew…eeew. A little too much variety in one bowl!
Today we went to the National Park nearby, NP Tierra del Fuego.
We did a short hike along the water (mostly along the Beagle Channel). It was a nice peaceful walk with nature until we came across a beach filled with perfect skipping rocks!
The windup…
…and the pitch!
We also saw many trees with huge knobs on them. Anyone know what causes these? I didnt touch them just in case they were contagious.
Near the end of the hike, we encountered many more birds. Sorry, I cant name them.
Tomorrow (Fri) we take a boat tour out in the Beagle Channel, where we hope to see sea lions and penquins. The tour also includes a stop at an Estancia, or large farm estate.

Can’t believe that there are icebergs in Chilli. The village at the top looks kinda like levenworth. You guys seem to be having a blast.
