Back to BA
April 6th, 2006 by AliciaOur trip to Uruguay ended with a relaxing day in Colonia del Sacramento. It was a small town with cobblestone streets. We walked through the entire historic section which took all of about an hour. It really was a small town.
Heres a picture of the “Puerta de la Ciudad” (door to the city). A wall was present around the whole city for protection from …I don’t remember who. Most of the wall is in ruins now, but this part remains intact.
This is the view from the lighthouse. It was the only tourist attraction that was open yesterday. They close all the museums on Wednesdays. Oh well, we needed a break from museums anyway!
We did enjoy our first traditional parillada (assortment of grilled meat) in Colonia. It started out great! Outdoor seating, a nice breeze, water view. We had a great bottle of medio y medio (half champagne and half white wine). Then the meat came. We had the steak which was ok, but fatty. Then we tried some other meat that I think was liver. Not so great. Then we tried intestine, and lastly blood sausage. I was really glad we hadnt eaten all our bread before the meat came. Im starting to understand the appeal of being vegetarian.
We returned to Buenos Aires last night. On our walk back to the hotel we looked at the “Cow Parade” along their waterfront. Similar to the Pig thing in Seattle a few years ago.
Today we really were tourists. We did one museum (Casa Rosada) and two tours (Teatre Colon and Casa Rosada). We learned about Argentinean presidents and one first lady (Evita, of course). At the Theatre Colon we were able to see the not only the main stage, but also the practice rooms, wig room, costume room, shoe room, etc. It was pretty cool. I’m almost inspired to go see an opera! Mike’s a little afraid.

Tomorrow we fly from Buenos Aires to Iguazu Falls… our last stop in Argentina.

I can’t wait to sit down with and a map. How have you been deciding where to go and what tours to take? Are you using a book? Did you plan it all out at once?
i am so interested. See you soon. Love, Rena (seattle) XOXo

We have three travel books (Lonely Planet, Rough Guide, and Frommers). Basically, we read through them all before we left and came up with a general itinerary. Amazingly, we both wanted to see mostly the same things! Since weve been travelling we been reading more in depth about each place, usually on the way there. We both go through the books and decide what we want to see and do. We usually end up highlighting the must sees and then the might like to see. Then we see how it goes!
We realized early on that we should pay extra for some of the tours. We skipped the Nazca Lines flight because it was $40 each. Later we felt we had missed out. So if a tour isnt really expensive then weve just done it. Like the tour in Ushuaia. It was about $50 each, which is pretty expensive. But, it was 9 hours mostly on a boat, and it was the only way to see the penguins. It was definitely worth it!
