Tile!
May 28th, 2007 by MikeWe’ve had a busy and fun Memorial Day weekend. On Saturday, we celebrated our niece Olivia’s one year birthday with friends and family. Jody and Bill rented the hall at the fire station in Hatfield and setup a real deluxe spread of food!
This is also the weekend for tiling the laundry, so I had to sneak in some work before the party. Friday night I stayed up late and cut the cement/hardi board underlayment.
Saturday morning I laid mortar and screwed in the boards. (I wouldn’t have thought to mortar under the backerboard, but that’s what the instructions said.)
Unfortunately, the darn screw heads were sticking up. Not much, but enough that the tiles would rub, and that’s a bad thing. Either cheap screws or my drill wasn’t powerful enough. So Saturday after the party, I went back over most of the screws and manually counter sunk them. Yuck!
I almost forgot, last thursday, I had to run down the street to the local wood shop and ask them to crank out a threshold for the door. I was impressed they could crank out this custom piece of maple in one day! Now I can grout right up to it.
Sunday morning, we took Nora to church for the very first time! She slept the whole time, whew! When we returned, we started the tile.
Laying out the pattern…
…a few hours later, I can’t believe how long this is taking!
all done! Check out the nice accent tiles Alicia chose.
This morning I’m going to sneak in a bike ride. Later, if I don’t get stuck on the phone for work I might grout the tiles. I’m a little afraid to start because as soon as I mix it up I’ll probably get a call for work. Good ‘ol Murphy’s Law…

Nice picture (and no, I don’t mind)….just wish we were all looking at the camera. Can’t wait to see the finished laundry/powder room project.
